50 Iraqis killed; a shelling attack at the headquarters of occupation in al-Azameyah
Iraq, Military, 6/18/2004

News reports in Baghdad said that a headquarters for the American forces in al-Azameyah quarters in the downtown of Baghdad was exposed to mortars shelling followed by intensive fire.

The attack took place after the killing of 6 Iraqis and wounding of other 4 in a booby trapped car explosion near a center for the Iraqi police in Yathreb city, locally known as al-Dalou'eyah to the north of Baghdad, according to one American military spokesman. However, the Iraqi police said that the victims are only four members of the Iraqi civil defense.

The explosions took place hours after a similar attack targeted a center for recruiting the new Iraqi army in al-Muthanna airport in Baghdad and this resulted in killing 35 persons and wounding other 138 and inflecting heavy losses in several cars.

The American administrator of Iraq, Paul Bremer, considered that al-Muthanna explosion carries the prints of the lead commander, presumed in al-Qaida organization Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, while the Iraqi defense minister Hazem al-Shalaan accused what he called regional forces of being behind the explosions which take place in Iraq.

The American occupation forces on Deyali governorate to the northern east of Baghdad said that five persons were killed in confrontations in Bahraz city between gunmen and the occupation forces and other 12 were injured in the confrontations.

In another attack, the Hungarian ministry of defense announced the killing of the first Hungarian soldier and wounding another in an explosion targeted their vehicle in al-Sweira south east of Baghdad. Hungary is deploying 300 soldiers in Iraq within the context of the coalition led by the USA.

In al-Najaf scores of members of al-Mahdi army of Muqtada al-Sader were seen leaving al-Najaf city. This, however, came after a call was made by al-Sader to his supporters, non residents in al-Najaf, to return back homes in various parts of Iraq.

This measure came after the announcement made by the US President George w. Bush that al-Sader's trend might play a political role following the handing over of the authority to the Iraqis by the end of the current month.

Concerning the file of prisoners and hostages held in Iraq, Anadolia news agency announced quoting the Turkish embassy in Baghdad the release of one Turkish hostage in Iraq who was kidnapped near Falluja city.
