Human Rights promotion, main conditions for Rule of Law, Morocco-Benin communique

King Mohammed VI of Morocco and his host President Mathieu Kerekou of Benin, on Wednesday, insisted on the need to promote and respect Human Rights in the continent, to achieve a "real" sustainable development.

This came in a joint communique released at the end of the two-day working and friendly visit of King Mohammed VI of Morocco to Benin, first leg of a five-nation African tour.

The two leaders, the communiquŽ said, "voiced their conviction that the promotion and respect of Human Rights, the respect of fundamental liberties and the deepening of pluralist democracy are the main conditions for the edification of the Rule of Law and the achievement of a real social and economic development."

Both leaders also voiced satisfaction at the "climate of peace and stability prevailing for many years in the two countries."

On bilateral relations, the two leaders reviewed cooperation since the meeting in April 1997 of the 2nd session of the two countries' joint Cooperation Commission. This cooperation will be boosted by a new program for the 2004-2005 two-year period.

After Benin, the monarch is expected in Cameroon, second leg of his five-nation African tour to last ten days.
