King Visit to Cameroon, a major event, ambassador
Morocco-Cameroon, Politics, 6/17/2004

The visit that king Mohammed VI of Morocco started this Wednesday to Cameroon is a "major event" for the country, said Cameroonian ambassador in Rabat, Mahamat Baba Sale.

The diplomat who was interviewed by MAP underlined that the projected meeting between king Mohammed VI and president Paul Biya of Cameroon is seen as an exceptional event in his country.

Cameroon is the second leg of a five-nation African tour that King Mohammed VI started on Monday. After Benin and Cameroon, the sovereign will fly to Gabon, Niger and Senegal.

Baba Salˇ underscored the excellent relations binding the two African countries and the convergence of their views on international and regional questions.

He recalled in this context Cameroon's stance over Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara.

The dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, previously known as Western Sahara, is opposing Morocco to the Algerian-backed separatist movement "Polisario" that is claiming independence of the former Spanish colony. This territory, South of Morocco, was retrieved by the Kingdom in 1975 under the Madrid accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.

"Since the beginning, Cameroon has urged for avoiding the balkanisation of Africa, and has always supported the territorial integrity of Morocco," he said.

The Moroccan sovereign's visit is also expected to instil a new spirit to economic relations between the two African countries.

Meanwhile, Morocco's ambassador to Cameroon, Omar Ennaji, deplored, in a separate interview with MAP, the low volume of exchanges between Morocco and Cameroon that do not exceed an annual US $10 million.

The Cameroonian press, on its part, voiced hope Wednesday that the royal visit will be crowned by the signing of accords to establish air and sea links between the two countries to help boost bilateral cooperation.

The first accord between Morocco and Cameroon was signed in 1974. Cameroon, which imports from Morocco fisheries products, leather, raw material, is Morocco's first customer in Sub-saharan Africa and its third provider (wood-cotton- cafˇ - natural rubber).
