Egypt's Muslim brothers take part in the founding of a human rights center
Egypt, Politics, 6/17/2004

The Muslim Bbrothers group in Egypt announce on Tuesday it had participated with figures representing various political trends from 15 countries in founding a new center for human rights.

Lawyer Abdul Menem Abdul Maqsoud, member of the guidance office in the group assumes the presidency of " Sawaseyah" ( Equal ) center for human rights and anti- discrimination.

Abdul Maqsoud stressed that the center is open to all trends and will be involved in disseminating, and campaigning human rights culture and integrating it into society. He said he will start his activity by following up the conditions and cases of human rights in Egypt and might expand to include other countries in the future.

He said that the center has a consultation council composed of 30 Egyptian, Arab and European figures representing all political demonstrations. "Sawaseyah" center includes five units: the unit of monitoring violations against prisoners and detainees, the students unit which is concerned with students rights, international relations unit which is interested in violations abroad, studies and researches units and a unit stands against all forms of discrimination.

In an attempt seeming to deny the control of the Muslim brothers of the center, Abdul Maqsoud said that there are only two members in the consultation council from the Muslim Brothers. They are Muhammad Mursi and Muhammad Abdul Qaddous.

Observers consider that the foundation of the center confirms the determination of the Muslim Brothers to carry out open activities despite they are banned legally.

Like most of the local legal groups, the center was registered as a civil company in an attempt to contain a law on organizing the work of civil societies and non- governmental organizations in Egypt.
