Kurdish parties in Syria defy banning decision
Syria, Politics, 6/16/2004
The Kurdish parties in Syria stressed determination to continue practicing politics despite the recent ban decision issued by the authorities concerning unlicensed parties.
A statement issued by 11 Syrian Kurdish parties said that the Kurdish parties inspire its actual legitimacy from being a representative for 2.5 million Kurds in Syria. The statement which was issued on Tuesday condemned what it called the sufferings of the Kurds in Syria of " special policies that violate all international norms and charters." These parties stressed that the " Kurdish people in Syria seek to draw just solutions for its case through political and peaceful struggle." The Kurdish parties denied any contacts with foreign sides or receiving foreign aid even after the acts of riots which took place in March. The statement considers that the political embargo " contradicts the positive statements made by President Bashar al-Assad in which he stressed the originality of the Kurds in Syria as an integral part of the Syrian national fabrics."
The Syrian authorities notified the leaderships of certain Kurdish parties by the beginning of this month that the political work of the parties they affiliate is banned and they have to halt this activity.
Among these parties are the Kurdish progressive democratic party led by Abdul Hamid Darwish and two wings for the Kurdish democratic party in Syria.
In March, confrontations, the first of each kind, took place between the Kurds and the security forces and the Arab tribes in al-Qamishli to the northern east of Syria resulted in killing 40 persons, according to Kurdish sources and 25, according to Syrian official sources.
