Iraqi government to be handed Saddam Hussein within two weeks; ICRC demands trying or releasing him
Iraq, Politics, 6/15/2004

The Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi said that the occupation forces will hand over the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to the Iraqi authorities to try him within two weeks.

However, a spokeswoman for the ICRC asked the occupation forces in Iraq to release Saddam Hussein or to accuse him officially with the date of transferring authority to the Iraqis on June 30, which is considered officially the end of the occupation.

The spokeswoman for the ICRC in Baghdad, Nada Doumani, said that according to the international and military law, the war prisoner should be released by the end of the conflict unless certain accusations are addressed to him.

Doumani indicated that " the coalition can hand over Saddam to the Iraqis who can address him accusations according to the Iraqi laws."
