Iraq, Military, 6/14/2004

Two hostages held in Iraq were released on Sunday. One is Egyptian and the second is Turkish. A mediator who asked to be anonymous said that he had held talks with persons close to the group which kidnapped the groups and is mediating to release them without giving other details.

On the other hand, one American military source was quoted as saying that the occupation forces will release 1400 Iraqi detainees before the date of handing over the authority to the Iraqis by the end of June. The spokesman explained that the occupation forces in Iraq will continue to hold between 4,000 and 5,000 detainees after that date.

In a relevant incident, one American military official said that the occupation forces intend to close the detention camp known as " Copper camp" at Baghdad's airport, which humanitarian organizations confirm it includes senior foreign Iraqi officials, after handing over the authority to the Iraqis.
