Some 12 Iraqis were killed in a booby trapped car explosion

One American soldier was killed and two others injured when an explosion took place on a road near al-Taji city to the north of Baghdad. An American military spokesman said the explosion was followed by fire exchange during which one of the attackers was killed.

This attack came within a bloody day in Baghdad and the surrounding area amid the escalation of the wave of attacks which target the occupation forces and the Iraqi officials, alike, with the approaching of the date of the new Iraqi government assuming the authority on June 30th.

American military sources announced the killing of 12 Iraqis and injuring of other 13 in a booby trapped car explosion in al-Rostomeyah area to the south east of Baghdad after news were contradictory over the number of persons killed earlier.

The explosion took place near a headquarters for the American occupation forces and targeted two patrols for the Iraqi police and inflected damages on 6 cars when a booby trapped car collided one of two police cars. Police sources said that four of its members were killed in the attack.

In an earlier time, gunmen assassinated the director of the public relations and cultural exchange at the Iraqi foreign ministry Kamal al-Jarrah by opening fire at him in front of his house in al-Ghazaleyah area to the west of Baghdad.

Al-Jarrah is considered the second official in the Interim Iraqi government to be assassinated following the assassination of the Iraqi foreign ministry secretary Bassam Kebeh who was killed by gunmen on Saturday.

Unidentified gunmen also assassinated the chairman of the geography department at Baghdad university Sabri al-Bayati ( 46 year old) when he was leaving the university complex in Bab al-Mu'azzam area in Baghdad's downtown.

In another development, the director of Baqouba outskirts Maj. Gen. Majid Almani survived an assassination attempt on Saturday after he was wounded following fire attack on him in the southern part of the city.

Director of Iraq's borders police, lt. gen. Hussein Mustafa, was exposed to an assassination attempt on Saturday at Baghdad's airport road.

One Iraqi driver and one technicians working for the Iraqi TV al-Iraqeyah were killed by bullets in al-Qaem city on the border with Syria. An official in the channel said that driver Jawad Kazem Hammadi and technician Abdul Karim Jasem were missed on Friday while preparing to return back to Baghdad and their bodies were found.

Meantime, Iraqi sources said that five Iraqis including three civilians were killed in clashes that took place yesterday at dawn between the fighters of al-Mahdi army which supports the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader and the American occupation forces in al-Sader city in Baghdad.
