Garang: we will be a great force in the north; The UN Security Council prepares for a force in the south

The final peace agreement to be signed between Khartoum and the southern rebels won the support of the UN Security Council which adopted unanimously a resolution that greenlights the formation of a peace keeping forces in southern Sudan.

The resolution weclomed Khartoum and the rebels signing on June 5 of 6 protocols and their commitment to reach a final statement. It urged the Sudanese government and the rebels to speed up the completion of the final statement, noting that this will " contribute to fixing stability and peace in Sudan."

The resolution welcomed the proposal of the UN secretary general Kofi Annan to form an advance team for three months to contact sides concerned and to prepare for UN observers force when the final agreement is signed.

The council expressed readiness to form a UN peace force to help in implementing the comprehensive peace agreement and called on Annan to give necessary recommendations on the size, formation and authorization of the force as soon as possible.

Meantime, the leader of the people's movement for the liberation of Sudan, Col. John Garang, yesterday visited Rombik city, the headquarters of the southern rebels to campaign for the peace agreement with Khartoum and promised his supporters to bring in peace.

Garang said that "the people's army for the liberation of Sudan will be in the next elections a major political forces in the south and in the north." In Cairo, the Middle East News agency said that The Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Taha met during his visit to Cairo on Thursday with the chairman of the democratic federal party and discussed with him prospects of the comprehensive political solution in Sudan. He added that the meeting between Taha and Meirghani, who also presides over the democratic national coalition, a coalition for the opposition parties, dealt with the peace agreement between Khartoum and the rebels in the south and the " comprehensivity of the political solution in Sudan." Meirghani stressed that the dialogue between the opposition and the government will " continue here ( in Cairo) and in Sudan." He called on all " opposition forces to return back to Sudan to take part in the national dialogue."
