Sudan, Politics, 6/11/2004

The First deputy for the Sudanese President Ali Othman Taha said following talks he had held with the Egyptian officials in Cairo that the final peace agreement with the southern rebels will be signed within four or five weeks, while the leader of the southern rebels, John Garang, said that the south will prefer separation and disengagement unless the new central government will spend from the oil wealth to improve its conditions.

Taha who had arrived on Wednesday evening in Cairo in the course of a tour which will lead him to Libya and Saudi Arabia met with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa.

Taha met with members in the political committee of the Sudanese democratic national coalition, the coalition of the northern and southern opposition, which stressed in a statement that the meeting which was held at Taha's initiative resulted " on agreeing to continue dialogue and contacts between the Sudanese government and the democratic national coalition in the coming phase so as to discuss the mechanisms for a comprehensive political solution which aims at establishing peace."

Taha told journalists in Cairo " that all main issues were solved and only the final touches are left." He added " we do expect that the final touches will take four to five weeks and then the final signature will be." He said that a conference for rebuilding Sudan will be held in Norway in November. He added that the peace agreement will ensure an opportunity for Sudan to improve its relations with Washington.

Taha said that the humanitarian crisis problem in Darfour is fabricated by the west against Sudan and the campaign carried out by non- governmental organizations are not justified ultimately.

In Kampala, religious officials said that Ugandan rebels from al-Raab army killed 41 Sudanese villagers at least on Tuesday in a raid near Jouba to the south of Sudan.
