Damascus: al- Maleh denies banning activities of unlicensed societies, parties
Syria, Politics, 6/10/2004
Chairman of the banned human rights society in Syria, Haitham al-Maleh, denied that his society knows of any banning on its activities or activities of other non- Kurdish parties and societies which were notified officially of the banning decision from the official authorities several days ago.
News reports said that al-Maleh added that what was stated on " activities of the socities and parties of illegal social, cultural and political nature in Syria is not correct," noting that he has no evidences on circulating this banning.
Al-Maleh indicated that the meeting of the general commission for the human rights in Syria was held by the end of May without any restrictions from the authorities. Al Maleh said " I do not think there is any intention in the state to close these societies." He said the banning decision is applicable only on the Kurdish parties, and this is for several reasons linked to their recent activities.
The Syrian activist and lawyer Anwa al-Bunni quoted directors of Kurdish organizations as saying that the official authorities notified them on that " the banning decision is valid on all."
