Garang seeks support in the south, Cairo congratulates Khartoum
Sudan, Politics, 6/9/2004
The leader of one of the main rebels movement to the south of Sudan, John Garang, on Tuesday started a tour in the south with the aim to win the support for the agreements finalized by his movement with the government in Khartoum in order to end a war which lasted for two decades.
The leader of the people's movement for the liberation of Sudan told journalists accompanying him in his tour which he had started in Yae village which was close to the border of the democratic Republic of Congo " I will notify my people now on these agreements." He added that " peace has become now between our hands " and that he has come to the south to " thanks the people for the sacrifices it had made during the past 21 years."
Garang launched with the first deputy of the Sudanese President Ali Othman Muhammad Taha in Nairobi last Saturday, officially the final round of talks on technical aspects to a permanent and comprehensive cease fire and on implementing protocols and agreements signed during the two past decades. The agreements include issues on sharing wealth and resources and giving a self- rule period of 6 years to the south.
Concerning conditions in Darfour to the west of Sudan, Garang expressed his interest over what is taking place there but he stressed that his movement is not part in that conflict. He stressed there is no possibility of solving the conflict by military means and proposed help to reach a political solution in that area.
Meantime, the Egyptian prime minister Atef Obeid arrived in Khartoum yesterday ( Tuesday) on top of a large delegation to congratulate the Sudanese government over the agreements reached between Khartoum and the southern rebels.
