Syria bans activities of parties and political and legal societies
Syria, Politics, 6/8/2004
The ruling Baath Party in Syria has decided to ban the activities of all not officially licensed political parties and societies that were used to be so far ignored while working, according to the Syrian activist and lawyer in the human rights field Anwar al-Bunni.
Al-Bunni noted the "decision of the Syrian regional leadership to ban any party or political, cultural and media activities and placing them under legal sue," noting that the decision target all parties and societies and not only the Kurdish ones."
Syria lacks law that organize the political life and therefore the existence of parties is considered "illegal" for the authorities. Several calls were made since President Bashar al- Assad accession to power in July 2000, demanding the issuance of a law that permits the establishment of political parties.
Al-Bunni considered that this decision is in contradiction with the international agreements for political, economic and cultural rights which Syria had signed.
The Baath Party has been ruling Syria since 1963. In 1972 it had permitted several parties from Naserite, national and communist trends from taking part in the authority within the confines of what is called the National progressive Front led by the Baath Party.
