Regional, Politics, 6/3/2004
The Arab Economy Unity Council approved Wednesday an Egyptian proposal to introduce a mechanism to follow up the implementation of the Tunis Arab Summit resolutions on economic aspects, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Fayza Abul Naga said.
"The Egyptian proposal addresses ways to activate the council to cope with regional and international changes and development requirements in Arab countries," she added.
The proposal took into consideration that upgrading of the council should be comprehensive and real to prevent duplication between its activities and those of the Arab Social and Economic Council to help promote the joint Arab Action, Abul Naga said.
Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa underlined the importance of the current round of the Arab Economic Unity Council, which comes in the wake of the Tunis Arab summit to address economic and social conditions of the Arab world.
Addressing the opening session, Moussa reiterated the importance of the council's activities, noting that the Arab summit has reviewed important economic and social issues, mainly the poverty problem in the Arab world, development problems, as well as the endorsement of the Arab Rights Charter.
