King voices 'acting' support to new Iraqi leader
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 6/3/2004

King Mohammed VI of Morocco has voiced the kingdom's "acting and constant" support to the new Iraqi leader, and resolve to usher in a "new era" the two countries' relations.

This came in congratulations message to Ghazi Ajil Al-Yawer, whose new interim government was announced Tuesday.

"We seize this opportunity to express the acting and constant support of the Kingdom of Morocco to yourself and to the new interim government of your brotherly country, and our total readiness to undertake all initiatives and back all efforts made in this regard at the international and at the United Nations level," the message read.

The sovereign, who praised the "wisdom" of the new Iraqi leader and his "commitment to the supreme interests" of his country and people, reaffirmed Morocco's "eagerness to usher in a new era" relations between the two countries, who "share rich and common heritage" and whose "culture is founded on commitment to noble ideals (É)"

Sunni leader, Ghazi al-Yawer, was previously a member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council, which dissolved itself after the choices were made final. The new leadership, to take power on June 30, was chosen by UN envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, in consultation with the council.

His appointment was welcomed by leaders around the world, including UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, who described as "a new beginning" the announcement of Iraq's interim government, while calling for continued vigilance about the country's security situation.

"Now that the new government is installed, we all need to look forward and work for the handover of sovereignty and power to the Iraqis on June 30," he said.
