Spain's Foreign Minister highlights relations with Syria

" Syria is an important country in the Middle East. She is the key country for solving all causes pertaining to security and stability in this significant region." Spain's Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos said Tuesday.

On the Syrian-European Association Agreement, he stressed that his country will do her best to accelerate signing of this agreement between Syria and the European Union.

In a statement to SANA, Moratinos reiterated his country's refusal to the US economic sanctions imposed on Syria.

" These sanctions are not in favor of dialogue and do not create understanding atmosphere for solving the raised obstacles and disagreements between Syria and the U.S." Moratinos added.

Concerning Iraq, he noted that Spain, as well as Syria, do feel concerned over the situation in Iraq stressing that Spain will exert every possible effort in the UN Security Council in favor of returning back security and stability to the Iraqi people.

The Spanish Foreign Minister said that he is convinced that President Bashar al-Assad and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will work in the interest of achieving the just and comprehensive peace and rebalancing system of the international relations.

" We are exerting efforts for finding a solution to the Palestinian cause." Moratinos said emphasizing that not realizing a just solution to the Palestinian question is the main reason of instability in the region.

In his statement, Moratinos welcomed, on behalf of his country's government and people, president Bashar al-Assad's visit to Spain.

" This visit has big meanings and pledges. It proves the existence of a joint will between the Syrian and Spanish leaderships to boost and the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and peoples which have always been excellent."
