Mubarak: Gaza is the beginning of withdrawal from Palestinian territories
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 6/1/2004

Palestinians and Israelis have agreed on Egypt's plan on halting violence, assassinations and resumption of the peace process. President Mubarak and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon yesterday discussed the Israeli plan for withdrawal from the occupied lands in Gaza strip under the road map peace plan.

They called for the need to mobilize efforts for enhancing security and stability in the wake of withdrawal.

President Mubarak had stressed the importance of direct meeting between the Israeli and Palestinian sides in order to prepare for the return to negotiations table and to put an end to the acts of violence which threaten the security and stability of the Palestinians and Israeli peoples.

News agencies quoted official Israeli sources as saying that Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom would arrive in Cairo on Thursday for talks with President Mubarak on Israeli withdrawal from Gaza strip. The United States, Germany, France and Britain have welcomed the Egyptian plan and promised to help its implementation. Under the plan, a meeting would be held in Ramallah between Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Palestinian factions.

Later, Cairo will host a meeting by the Palestinian factions and the PA before a meeting between Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei for discussing guidelines for resumption negotiations. Reports say that the upcoming few days would witness a political activity that is expected to include a meeting between Palestinian Premier Ahmed Qurei, and Sharon to achieve the same targets set and included in President Mubarak's plan to:
* Achieve a breakthrough in the current impasse facing the Palestinian cause.
* Put an end to violent activities, including assassinations, demolition of houses and usurping lands.
* Help revive the peace process through meetings between the parties concerned.
* Guarantee that an expected Israeli withdrawal from Gaza would be based on international legitimacy principles, signed agreements and accepted and accredited formulas, so that such a withdrawal may not be unilateral in accordance with the will of one party.
