Five Americans, four Iraqis were killed, clashes in al-Najaf
Iraq-USA, Military, 6/1/2004

Clashed were renewed Sunday in al-Najaf city between fighters belonging to the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader and the American occupation forces despite the truce proposed by al-Sader.

The Iraqi fighters exchanged fire with one American tank near Wadi al-Salam cemetery in the city.

Medical sources in the city's hospital said that three persons were injured during the clashes and one official in al-Sader ( the martyr) office announced that the American forces are responsible for the eruption of the fighting.

Immediately, several traders closed their shops and streets of the Shiite city became empty after it had restored traffic since Thursday.

This however, happened when there are urgent preparations to transfer the authority from the occupation forces to the Iraqis, especially appointing a president for the republic in the provisional phase.

On the other hand, a statement for the American occupation army in Iraq said that three American marines were killed in attacks in al-Anbar governorate to the west of Baghdad on Saturday, giving no more details.

Meantime, one American military statement announced the killing of two other soldiers, one of them because of wounds he had in mortars attacks shelling to the south of Baghdad several day ago, while the second was killed in conditions described as hostile.

Several explosions also took place in different areas of Iraq on Saturday and resulted in several attacks among the occupation soldiers and damaging several military vehicles.

In Falluja, to the west of Baghdad, a large explosion took place that resulted in wounding several American soldiers.

In al-Musil, the police announced the killing of one woman and her daughter yesterday early morning as two mortars shelling fell on their house to the south of the city.

On the other hand, six American soldiers were injured in a booby trapped car explosion to the east of the American Tel Afar base in the city. The injured were admitted to a military hospital.

In al-Koufa, news reports said that four Iraqis were injured on Saturday following the eruption of confrontations between al-Mahdi army fighters of the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader and the American occupation forces.
