Arab Lawyers lash out at US 'abusive interventionism' in the region
Regional-USA, Politics, 5/29/2004
Secretary General of the Arab Lawyers Union, Brahim Semlali, on Thursday lashed out what he described as "the abusive interventionism" of the United States in Arab countries' domestic affairs, as is the case in Iraq.
Addressing the opening session of the Union's permanent bureau, Semlali denounced the US "unconditional support" regarding the massacres carried out by the Israeli forces against Palestinians in the occupied territories.
He also criticized the "Greater Middle East Initiative" that Washington is trying to "impose" on the region, a project fully rejected by the Chairman of the Arab Lawyers Union Sameh Achour, who said that "Arab countries totally refuse any sort of interference in their domestic affairs and are the only one able to carry out their democratic process, without America's help."
The opening session of this meeting was marked by a message sent by Chairman of the Palestinian national Authority Yasser Arafat to participants in which he urged Arab Lawyers to endeavour to put an end to Israel's "barbarous aggression" against the Palestinian people.
