Sudanese opposition welcome peace agreements protocols
Sudan, Politics, 5/29/2004

The opposition Sudanese democratic national coalition welcomed the signing of the peace protocols between Khartoum and the southern rebels ( people's army for the liberation of Sudan) aiming at putting an end to the civil war.

In a statement, the coalition from Cairo confirmed that "its welcome comes from its announced stand concerning the Mashakos protocol in being a step on the way to maintain a comprehensive peace for Sudan's causes." The statement called for the solution to include all sides and to deal with all issues especially Darfour and East Sudan issue.

The coalition announced it is looking forward to have the next step the transfer of negotiations from bilateral to multilateral and from partial treatment to comprehensive treatment of issues in implementation of unity, democracy and development.

The Sudanese government and the rebels of the people s army for the liberation of Sudan signed on Wednesday evening in Nevasha resort in Kenya three main agreements relating to sharing the central authority and the three areas under disputes. The three agreements also paved the way to finalize a final peace agreement that put an end to the longest civil war taking place in the African continent.

The agreements which were concluded after 101 days of negotiations state that the rebels accepts a rate of 45% of the authority in al-Nouba mountain and the Blue Nile, for the central leadership in Khartoum to give up the post of deputy governor of the regional administration in the south for the rebels.

Signing these agreements is considered a basic step for the two sides in order to sign a comprehensive peace agreement in July defining ways of running the country jointly within a six year provisional period, according to Mashakos agreement.
