Amnesty International calls for prosecuting human rights violators in Tindouf Camps
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 5/28/2004
Amnesty International has called for bringing to justice those guilty of human rights violations in the Polisario-controlled Tindouf camps, southwestern Algeria.
The London-based human rights-advocacy NGO is calling the Polisario to "end all forms of torture inflicted on Moroccans it is detaining in the Tindouf camps, liberate them without any conditions and allow them to return to their homeland, AI Spokesperson, Nicole Shouciry, told Moroccan TV in a phone interview.
In its 2004 report, AI revealed that human rights violations are committed by the separatist movement "Polisario" which is claiming the secession of Moroccan southern provinces.
Amnesty said the Polisario leaders continue to enjoy "impunity," adding that freedom of speech, association and movement are restricted in those camps.
The Human Rights organization also brought up the case of the "hundreds" of Moroccan prisoners of war held captive by the Polisario.
