Amnesty International reveals human rights abuses committed by separatist movement Polisario
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 5/27/2004
Amnesty International has revealed the human rights violations committed by the Algerian-backed separatist Movement "Polisario" in the Tindouf Camps, southwestern Algeria, in its annual report, reported on Wednesday the Tangiers-based Radio Mediterranee International (Medi 1).
Amnesty said the Polisario leaders continue to enjoy "impunity," adding that freedom of speech, association and movement are restricted in those camps.
The Human Rights organization also brought up the case of the "hundreds " of Moroccan prisoners of war held captive by the Polisario which is claiming the independence of the Moroccan Sahara, formerly known as Western Sahara. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.
