Morocco, Mauritania sign package of agreements
Morocco-Mauritania, Politics, 5/27/2004

Morocco and Mauritania signed, in Rabat Wednesday, a package of agreements meant to consolidate the legal framework of their cooperation and to set up a mechanism of consultation between their foreign affairs ministries.

The two states which wound up Wednesday the 4th session of their high joint commission co-chaired by their Prime Ministers, agreed to cooperate in civilian rescue, water management, and to regulate the sector of construction and public works.

A cooperation protocol in judiciary fields was also signed by the two countries that further agreed to boost their cooperation in issues of Waqf (Islamic endowments) and Islamic affairs, fighting illiteracy while businessmen inked a memo related to sea fisheries.

Moroccan Premier Driss Jettou, hailed "the excellent relations existing between HM King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian president, and bilateral political and diplomatic ties," conceding, however that at the level of trade and investments much remains to be done.

Trade between the two countries is "very weak" and investments, hardly some dozens million DH a year, are "quasi-inexistent," Jettou deplored.

He urged the two states' private sectors to turn the favorable investment conditions brought about by the newly-signed agreements into business opportunities, citing in this regard the new Nouadhibou-Nouakchott road that will link Morocco to Mali, via Mauritania, to open in October.
