Morocco sees increase in number of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia
Morocco-Saudi Arabia, Economics, 5/25/2004
The number of Moroccan pilgrims to the Islamic holy sites in Saudi Arabia should be increased in light of findings of the general population census that Morocco will conduct this summer.
The announcement was made by Moroccan minister of Habus (Islamic endowments) and Islamic affairs, Ahmed Taoufiq who held a meeting on Sunday with Saudi authorities over preparations for next year Haj season.
Presently, an annual 30,000 Moroccans are allowed to perform the Haj (major pilgrimage) according to the quota system set by Saudi Arabia for each Islamic country.
The Moroccan official also urged for respecting flight schedules during the peak period of pilgrimage which takes place according to the Islamic calendar year, before the Aid Al Adha (immolation feast).
