Morocco, Argentina to negotiate preferential agreement
Morocco-Argentina, Economics, 5/22/2004
Morocco and Argentina have decided to start negotiations for the conclusion of a "preferential agreement," announced in Rabat Thursday Moroccan Delegate Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Taieb Fassi Fihri.
The agreement will enable Morocco to consolidate trade cooperation with the regional common market "Mercosur" which, in addition to Argentina, musters Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, Fihri told the press at the end of the opening session of the 7th Moroccan-Argentinean joint commission which he co-chairs with Argentinean deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Taiana.
In February, Argentina had pledged its support to Morocco with a view to concluding a free trade agreement between the Kingdom and Mercosur.
Moroccan and Argentinean officials reviewed during the session their respective experiences in fisheries, agriculture and the technology of desertification satellite surveillance. They also agreed to undertake concrete actions to develop bilateral cooperation in investment and trade exchanges.
The joint commission is further probing means to foster cooperation in culture, said Fihri, underlining that the scope of bilateral cooperation is "broad" both in the economic and political realms.
On his part, the Argentinean official expressed his country's readiness to define a legal framework to regulate trade cooperation and investment, highlighting the private sector's role in the intensification of bilateral cooperation.
A businessmen delegation accompanying Taiana is due to visit Tangier (northern Morocco) to explore investments in the region.
On the sidelines of the joint commission meeting, the Argentinean minister, on a two-day visit to Morocco, met Thursday with Moroccan premier, Driss Jettou.
Their talks dealt with bilateral relations and the Sahara question, the prime minister's department said in a release, noting that Taiana is carrying a message to king Mohammed VI from Argentinean president, Nestor Kirchner.
