Amman hosts a conference on violence against women
Regional-Jordan, Culture, 5/22/2004
Works of the Arab consultation meeting start today in Amman. The event is organized by the International institute in solidarity with women in Jordan under the title towards issuing " an Arab report on violence against the woman."
The chairperson of the Institute, Lina Abu Qoura, told the press that the meeting which will last for three days aims at coming out with a perspective on how to prepare an Arab report on violence against woman on which researchers, and civil society organizations can relate their studies and use as a reference in order to deal with the phenomenon of violence against the Arab women and enabling the woman taking her genuine role in Arab societies.
Several experts and specialists in the area of violence, statistics and social surveys and representatives of establishments concerned in 15 Arab states are taking part.
The participants will be divided into work groups discussing the concepts of violence and violence indicators against the woman and a proposed list for the context of the report.
Abu Qoura said that this meeting falls in the framework of the violence- fighting program against woman organized by the International Institute in solidarity of woman and in response to the drastic need to issue an Arab report in the absence of statistics and precise information on the phenomenon. This meeting, however, is an attempt to mobilize efforts and exchange expertise and information on the extent of the spread of violence against the woman in the Arab homeland.
Worthy mentioning that the International Institute in solidarity with women is a non- governmental Jordanian organization, active since its foundation in 1998 at the initiative of Mrs. Asma al-Khuder who occupied the post of the official spokesman for the current Jordanian government.
In its programs, the institute concentrates on areas of disseminating human rights of women and fighting violence against the women and giving guidance services directly to women at the social, legal and psychological aspects as well as running a specialized electronic information center and a specialized library.
