Oppressing Bahrain's demonstration topples its minister of the interior
Bahrain, Politics, 5/22/2004

A demonstration of protest against the American aggressions on the holy shrines in Najaf and Karbala yesterday toppled the minister of the Interior in Bahrain after attempts to oppress it by police members, the opposition said resulted in wounding 30 persons.

A Bahraini official source said that King Hamad Bin Issa al-Khalifa appointed yesterday lt. gen. Sheikh Rashed Bin Abdullah al- Khalifa as a new minister for the interior to replace the former minister Sheikh Muhammad Bin Khalifa al-Khalifa who used to occupy this post since 1974 in the context of a limited ministerial reshuffle.

Bahrain's news agency quoted the King as saying " what had happened between the police and the demonstrators was a matter that did not please us and what had happened should be reconsidered in order to define the responsibility according to the law," adding that the King of Bahrain " ordered to start that."

Thousands of persons gathered in Manama earlier in the day in protest of targeting the holy shrines in Iraq by the occupation forces and this resulted in confrontations with the police forces during which tear gas were used.

A protest of demonstration was organized at the invitation of senior Shiite Imams in Bahrain including Sheikh Issa Qasem who strongly criticized in his Friday's sermon the military occupation operations in al-Najaf, Karbala and al-Koufa.
