Jordan: al- Majd stopped, refusing apology to Saudi Arabia
Jordan-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 5/21/2004

The Jordanian weekly al-Majd decided yesterday to stop publishing over rejecting giving " explanation " about an article it had published considered damaging for the relations between Jordan and Saudi Arabia. This is, however, after the state security court set that ( apology) as a precondition so as to permit the paper continue publication.

The paper editor in chief Fahd al-Reimawi who was arrested on the background of issuing a tough article on the Saudi policy in the region.

The state security court decided to detain al-Reimawi for 15 days under the charge of " damaging the relations with a foreign country " and to suspend the publication of the paper until unlimited time. This is because of an article he had written about Saudi Arabia under the title " formulating politics by shameful words."

The court decided after a mediation by the Journalists Union and interference of the Jordanian prime minister Faisal al-Fayez to release al-Reimawi and re-publish the paper under the condition he has to indicated in a later article " clearly and positively Jordan's relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."

Al-Reimawi said " I am ready to give concession to Jordan and to the homeland, but I am not ready to give concession to Saudi Arabia, nor will commend the Saudi government."
