Al-Fahoum: no nearby settlement between Damascus and Fatah
Syria-Palestine, Politics, 5/21/2004
The chairman of the Palestinian national salvation committee, Khaled al-Fahoum, ruled out the possibility of achieving a settlement between Damascus and the leadership of the Fatah movement on their points of difference at the meantime, despite, however, the relative improvement of their bilateral relations.
Al-Fahoum denied in a press statement reports which talked on opening offices for Fatah in Syria and the return back of relations to what they had been in the 1970s, noting that the first recognition made by Syria of the Palestinian authority was President al-Assad meeting with the Palestinian minister of culture Yahya Yakhlaf since two weeks. Al-Fahoum said that al-Assad described this meeting " the first welcome in Syria for a Palestinian authority representative," in remarks to a limited official recognition the Palestinian authority has already enjoyed in Syria, but this recognition has no notable dimensions at the meantime to resume the relations between Fatah and Damascus.
