Syria announces new gas discoveries in Palmyra area

Syria on Thursday declared significant gas findings made by a Croatian oil and gas company in the northern central part and underlined the new gas production would allow Syria to export for the first time quantities of the currently all-locally-consumed amount, a senior official in the Ministry of Oil and Mineral resources said.

Minister of Oil Ibrahim Haddad told reporters Syrians were notified by the Croatian INA Oil and Gas company about the discoveries in "Tadmor" or Palmyra region, North East of Damascus.

" These important gas findings will back the national economy by digging out additional quantities, treat them and prepare them for the consumption or export," the minister said.

The gas field of Jahar is 40 KM. West of Palmyra in central Syria. It stretches over 4800 cubic KM. Primary figures say the field reserve reaches at 15 billion cubic meters while Syria produces 24 million cubic meters pd which is totally-locally- consumed.

The Minister declared that Lebanon would be the first country to make use of the additional discovered quantity of gas. A recent Syrian-Lebanese contract agreed to pump 1,5 million cubic meters of gas daily in the first stage to be later increased to 3 million cubic meters and then 6 million cubic meters.
