Minister highlights obstacles to Arab human rights charter
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 5/20/2004
Moroccan Human Rights Minister, Mohamed Aujjar, highlighted Tuesday the obstacles hampering the adoption of the Arab human rights charter, underlining the existence of wide differences between Arab states over the document.
Aujjar, who was speaking during the House of Advisors question-time, noted that Morocco is an example to be followed in the Arab states regarding human rights. He underlined in this connection the initiatives taken by king Mohammed VI aiming at enlarging the scope of liberties, consolidating human rights and enhancing the values of democracy and modernity.
The minister recalled Morocco's proposals to enrich the Arab human rights charter, especially the need to guarantee human rights, free elections, pluralism, the separation of powers, and the right to development.
He added that the documents submitted by Morocco to the Arab permanent commission for human rights are among the most important references presented to the commission.
On the same day, Aujjar held a meeting with representatives of the US national democratic institute for international affairs (NDI), on the development of the human rights situation in Morocco, the legislative reforms undertaken by the country and the democratic evolution.
