Morocco, Local, 5/20/2004

The 3rd edition of the Rabat annual festival "Mawazine, world rhythms" opened Tuesday in Rabat to present artistic works of various continents in a space of cultures interaction.

Princess Lalla Salma, spouse of king Mohammed VI, and princesses Lalla Meryem and Lalla Asmaa (sisters of king Mohammed VI) chaired the opening ceremony of the festival alongside several figures of the world of arts and culture who viewed a show presented for the first time by the Cambodian Royal Ballet, that was proclaimed by UNESCO as masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

This third edition, organized this May 18-26, will include shows from Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

A "light show" will be organized for the first time in Mawazine festival to recount the history of Rabat.

The festival's chairman, Abdeljalil Lahjomri, highlighted at the opening ceremony the importance of arts and culture that contribute to the "immunization of societies against destructive currents," alluding to the terrorist attacks that killed 45 people last May 16 in Casablanca.

A minute of silence was observed during the ceremony in memory of the victims.
