Al-Bashir assesses the situation in Darfour and discusses relations with Chad
Sudan, Politics, 5/20/2004

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan arrived today in Deyala, capital of Darfour south district to assess the humanitarian, security and political conditions in the region.

According to Um Durman official radio, al-Bashir will lead the leaders of Darfour south, noting that conditions there are witnessing notable improvement.

It is scheduled, however, that al-Bashir will discuss on Friday with his Chad's counterpart Idris Deibi in al-Jninah, west Darfour, the situation on the joint border that extend for almost 1000 Km.

According to the Sudanese radio, a telephone call was made yesterday between the two Presidents, stressing that the situation between the two neighboring states returned back to normalcy after the rebels movement which was recorded in the lines of the Chad's forces.

Chad's acting defense minister stressed on Tuesday that members of Chad's army made a rebellion movement on Sunday but the government was able to foil it and control back the situation without resorting to violence.

On the other hand, the secretary general of the ruling National Congress in Khartoum, Ibrahim Ahmad Omar, said that Sudan stands completely beside the government of Chad, adding that " stability in Chad means stability in Sudan." However, the UNHCR chairman stressed that the ethnic groups which form the minority in Darfour are still exposed to attacks in the region despite the fact that the rebels and the government forces are talking about peace.

UNHCR director was talking in a press institute in Washington about " a humanitarian catastrophe " in this war which resulted in killing 10,000 persons and dislocating one million inside Sudan and other 100,000 to Chad. He added "It is not reasonable to celebrate a peace agreement while darfour is still subjected to bombardment where people are terrified."
