The lawyer of the Egyptian Islamic groups mediates to stop violence in Saudi Arabia
Egypt-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 5/20/2004

The lawyer of the Islamic groups and guardian of the initiative to stop violence between the authority and the Islamic groups in Egypt, Muntasir al-Zayyat announced he will head for Saudi Arabia on the hope he will be able to help halting violence in the Kingdom, calling on opening channels of dialogue with the " extremists."

Al-Zayyat explained to reporters in Doha on the sideline of " violence demonstration" in Doha " I will go to the Kingdom for performing al-Omra ( minor al-Haj ) rituals, basically but I will not be late to meet with any side there for saving blood." He stressed "what was happening in Egypt since 20 years is taking lace in Saudi Arabia now." He indicated " no Saudi official side asked for my help, but I will try to meet representatives of various social strata and I do hope to propose my experience before my brothers there."

Asked if he had arranged for meeting in Saudi Arabia with certain side accused by the authority of committing acts of violence, al-Zayat said " this did not happen and I do not want to surpass events." He called for opening channels of dialogue with the " extremists " in the Kingdom noting " to those who raised the 'No for a dialogue,' I ask whom then they will talk to."

He indicated that " circles in Egypt continued to refuse the dialogue with the extremists for 17 years but continued to amend its policies after it was found out that this way is not correct." However, al-Zayyat blamed the extremist Islamic movement which refuse to comprehend the experiences of others and persist to start the experience from the very beginning."
