Pope denounces violence in the Middle East, meeting with Lahoud

Pope John Paul II stressed the necessity of establishing just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

The Pope, welcoming Lebanese President Emile Lahoud to the Vatican Saturday, said "I pray God to back efforts of all men of good will towards peace, particularly in the Middle East." For his part President Lahoud emphasized that just solutions are the only means for preserving peoples' rights, stability and peace in the world.

In another meeting with the Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sudano, President Lahoud called for giving the UN the biggest role in Iraq and enabling the Iraqi people to determine their own national choices.

He asserted the importance of Papal role in convincing the US to accept implementing of international legitimacy resolutions and facilitate the success of initiatives to restore peace and stability in the region.
