Sit-in in Rabat to protest abuses against Iraqi prisoners
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 5/15/2004
The Group of National Action to Support the Struggle of the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples staged on Thursday a sit-in before the UN representation in Rabat to protest US soldiers abuses against Iraqi prisoners.
Protesters, including political parties representatives, unions and NGOs, shouted slogans denouncing the crimes perpetrated in Iraqi prisons.
They called on the United Nations and international organizations to "assume their responsibility and sue all the persons involved in the Abu Ghreib scandal, and in all abuses in occupiers' jails in Iraq and Palestine."
Prisoners freed from Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison on Friday complained US guards tortured them. Torture included hanging detainees from walls by their hands and making them carry heavy loads.
US forces have begun to release hundreds of prisoners. The first busload of 315 prisoners were released Friday and another 315 prisoners are due to be released next week.
