Damascus: An suspected explosive in al-Marjeh area
Syria, Politics, 5/13/2004

The Syrian security authorities on Tuesday cordoned the crowded al-Marjeh area after receiving a warning that a suspected bag was thrown near a building for trade and government offices.

Witnesses said that the authorities imposed a security belt around a trade building composed of several floors situated on one of the corners overlooking al-Marjeh square and just few steps from the Syrian ministry of the interior. The witness said that the operation did not last long and the bag was depicted and was taken by the police car after evacuating neighboring building and converting the traffic off the crowded area.

Last week, the Syrian security authorities suspected a car bearing a Saudi plate in al-Thawra street and well-informed sources then confirmed that the car had no explosives.
