Some 23 Somalis killed in inter groups clashes
Somalia, Politics, 5/12/2004

Some 23 Somalis were killed and scores wounded in different clashes between warring groups in the southern part of the country during the three past days.

Citizens in the area said that most of the killed persons during the clashes were civilians and the motives of the fighters ranged between revenge raids and differences over controlling buses, roads or trading in the black market.

Witnesses talked about fighting and clashes that took place in different times between Friday and Monday in Beihani quarters to the north of Mogadishu and al- Bakkara quarters ( to the South and Armexan village which is 60 Kilometers to the southern west of the Somali capital) and Hao town, 300 Km from Mogadishu.

Seven of the murdered men were killed during the fighting which erupted in Mandira town, situated on the Somali- Kenyan borders on Saturday. Citizens in the area said that the militias which belong to Marihan tribe is fighting in order to control al-Rosoum bridge on the Somali side of the town which joins the borders.

However, disorder overwhelmed all parts of Somalia whose population tolls seven million inhabitants after toppling the military leader Muhammad Seyad berri in 1991 and the war and famine resulted in killing hundreds of them after that.

Inter- Somali negotiations are being held in Kenya since October 2002 in an attempt to form an administration with an authority stretching on all parts of the country which falls under the control of the warring war lords.
