In conclusions of the preliminary meetings for Tunis's summit, Arab ministerial consensus over reform projects
Regional, Politics, 5/11/2004

It was agreed in the final session of the Arab foreign ministers, which was held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo to liquidate the so far pending disputes on the issue of political reform in the Arab states.

The Arab ministers approved in conclusion of the preliminary meeting of the Tunisia summit to keep the "document of honor" proposed by the kingdom of Saudi Arabia without amendment and to include the proposals submitted by Tunisia over democracy and reforms and to represent women in a separate document named the political reforms document.

The Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem said that the ministers agreed to draw a final formula to the political reforms issue that will be submitted to the summit and that this formula is not relevant to the American proposal on the Greater Middle East and the political reforms in the Arab states.

Balkhadem stressed that the final statement stresses the need of developing the Arab governing system and supporting the role played by the civil society in the area of deepening democracy and stressing the independency of judiciary, public freedoms, human rights and the rights of woman.

The Algerian minister said that the document stemmed from personal convictions that are complying with the religious and cultural values in the Arab world.
