Sudan: members in the ruling party called for the separation of the north from the south
Sudan, Politics, 4/30/2004
A group of Sudanese politicians including members in the ruling national congress party in Sudan called for the separation of northern Sudan from its south, considering that the north had suffered much because of unity.
The Sudanese papers issued yesterday said that the politicians formed a society called "the just peace forum" whose members call on the Sudanese government, not to sign a peace agreement with the southern rebels. According to the Sudanese papers, members of the group considered that the peace negotiations so far held will be conducive to an agreement threatening " the security and identity of Sudan and its social security." They also called on the government to organize a general referendum after one year and not after 6 years as stated in the agreement with the people's movement, in order to decide the fate of southern Sudan. The group is headed by the former minister of health Babaker Abdul Salam and includes the minister of finance Abdul Wahab Othman.
On the other hand, Chadian mediators in the negotiations of the government and Chad's rebels announced that the Arab al-Janjawid militias which fight beside the Sudanese forces in Darfour continue their violations. Khartoum did not deprive the movement of its weapons as stated in April 8th agreement. Alami Ahmad, the member in the mediation delegation and the diplomatic adviser for the President of Chad Idris Deibi said " we confirm that al- Janjawid militias are very active and their weapons were not dismantled." Thereby, the mediators confirmed what was stated by one of the two active rebels movement in Darfour -- the justice and equality movement, which on Tuesday accused Khartoum of not honoring the agreement signed on April 8th in Njamina through not dismantling the weapons of its allies and violating the cease fire stated in the agreement.
