Libya asks for chopping it from the American terrorism list
Libya-USA, Politics, 4/28/2004
The secretary general of the Libyan people's general committee, Shukri Ghanem, said on Monday that the special laws in Libya will be abrogated quickly, expressing his hope that the US will lift Libya's name from the list of the terrorism supporting countries.
The man who occupies the post of the prime minister in Libya justified the emergency laws prevailing in Libya that certain "conditions, challenges and problems Libya is facing, had imposed such laws." But he tried to belittle the consequences of their impacts by saying that there are numerous special laws and that " special committees are studying now all laws which are not complying with the public rights." However, the Amnesty International contradicted statements of Shujri Ghanem and stressed in a statement that coincides with the historical visit of the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi to Brussels that Libya still jails, tortures and execute political prisoners.
The Amnesty International issued a list of human rights violations in Libya at the time when al-Qathafi is visiting the headquarters of the European Union and urged him to fulfill his promises and found " an ordinary mechanism for the criminal law." In a statement, the organization said "Libya should convert its promises concerning human rights into action, and that there is an urgent need to reveal facts concerning previous events and the cling of the Libyan authorities to internal reforms in order to deal with current violations."
On the other hand, Ghanem stressed that Libya expects Washington to lift its name from the terrorism sponsoring states which will be shortly issued by the American administration, justifying that by the fact that relations with Washington has started to be improved and "we have started to look forward to the future." On Saturday, the (Libyan foreign minister) Abdul Rahman Shalqam said that a bilateral agreement over normalization of relations signed in 2003 stated the removal of Libya's name from the terrorism list after the improvement of relations with the USA.
