Court of appeal finds al-Jazeera correspondent as not guilty
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 4/26/2004
The court of Appeal in Khartoum found as not guilty the correspondent of al-Jazeera TV in Sudan, Islam Saleh, of the accusation addressed to him according to the customs law, but found him guilty of the second accusation of publishing false news.
In a statement to al-Jazeera TV yesterday, lawyer Abdul Salam al-Jazouli said that the court decided to reduce the penalty from one month to two week imprisonment. Saleh last Friday completed his two weeks in prison.
Meantime, the defendant commission for Saleh said it will submit the case to the court of Cassation at the Supreme court concerning the second part of the court's decision.
However, North Khartoum court found al-Jazeera correspondent guilty over the charge of opposing Customs officers and preventing them from performing their duty while inspecting al-Jazeera office in Khartoum.
