British Ambassador in Cairo and ME Peace
Regional-UK, Politics, 4/26/2004
The British Ambassador in Cairo Sir Derek Plumbley described the situation of the Middle East peace process as very difficult, particularly following Israel's assassination of Hamas leaders Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abdul Aziz Rantissi.
Ambassador Plumbley, in an interview published Saturday in the Egyptian daily 'Al-Ahram', pointed out that his country strongly criticized Israel's policy of assassinations, branding them as unjustified and will not bring security to Israel.
On the reforms in the Middle East, the Ambassador said Britain believes that any initiative for reforms should emerge from within the region itself.
He added the EU could help Arab reform initiatives and offer needed assistance in this regard to any Arab state.
