Second session of legislative elections started in Comoros
Comoros, Politics, 4/26/2004
Voting operations for the second session of legislative elections to choose members of the federal council ( parliament) started yesterday in Comoros.
Deputy chairman of the committee in charge of organizing the elections said that the voting operations proceeded naturally at least in the two islands of the Greater Comoros island and Mohelle, waiting for information from Anjwan, the third island in the federation.
Some 225,000 persons eligible to vote in the three islands will elect some 18 parliamentarians out of 33 who will be members in the federal council of the Greater Comoros islands, while two separate parliaments for Mohelle and Anjwan will appoint the other 15 parliamentarians.
The legislative elections includes the last phase of the reconciliation process which started in 2001 in the country which has 630,000 citizens after the elections of the local parliaments for the three islands.
Supporters for the independence of the three islands won the greatest majority in the local councils and it seems they will be able from achieving a relative majority in the federal elections.
