Sudan escapes UN condemnation over the deteriorated situation in Darfour

The UN human right committee has called on Sudan to eliminate the militias fighting beside it against the rebels in Darfour.

The countries, members in the human rights committee agreed the decision which no longer indicated in name to these militias ( al-Janjawid) which was in the draft resolution and Khartoum denied supporting these militias.

The resolution which was issued just in the form of an announcement by the chairman of the committee said that the human rights committee share the UN secretary general Kofi Annan his concern over the numerous information which talked about human rights violations and the humanitarian situation in Darfour. The original draft resolution indicated " continued attacks against the civilians and " emptying whole areas by means of force." The resolution added that the "Sudanese government will vow to eliminate the armed militias" and asked for the nomination of an independent expert for one year on the status of human rights in Darfour and not a special "Repartee" as stated.

The announcement made by the UN secretary got the consent of 50 votes against one and 2 abstainers. The US announced it will vote against the decision after it had tried in vain to adopt the constituent resolution.

This was after a time when the Human Rights Watch organization accused the Sudanese governmental forces and Arab militias of being responsible for the killing of scores of black Africans in Darfour area to the west of Sudan in March.

The organization whose headquarters in New York said, after one month of research, that scores of attacks were launched by Arab militias known as al-Janjawid in collaboration with the government forces resulted in killing 126 men belong to "al-Four " ethnical group aging between 20 to 60.
