Strike continues in BuSalim prison in Libya
Libya, Politics, 4/21/2004

More than 100 political detainees and prisoners in BuSalim prison to the south of Tripoli, Libya continue their hunger strike since Saturday morning in protest on their detention conditions.

News reports said that the committee assigned by the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi under the supervision of the internal security chief col. Al-Tuhami did not reach a result to end the strike and deal with the situation.

News reports said that the strikers demand releasing all prisoners of opinions and to quickly provide medical treatment to patients and give medical aid to them, and halting torture and non- humanitarian practices inside the prison.

This is the first strike of its kind since Al-Qathafi assumed power in Libya on September 1st, 1969.

The strike comes at a time when al-Qathafi called on Monday for abrogating all emergency law in the country and ending any legal measure unlicensed by the attorney general or to issue a penalty outside the context of the judiciary.
