Libya-USA, Politics, 4/21/2004
The British Financial Times daily said that the US will lift economic sanctions which it imposes on Libya within days.
This lift will allow the American companies to sign oil contracts with Libya following years of banning these companies from dealing with this country.
In its yesterday's issue, the paper quoted American diplomatic sources as saying that the US President George W. Bush might announce on Wednesday lifting the sanctions imposed on Libya since 1986. Sanctions which banned the American companies from dealing with Libya, noting that Washington will stop enforcing the legislation which punish foreign oil companies which invest in the field of fuel in Iran and Libya.
For its part, the paper explained that Washington will not take the final decision Libya wants, provides for dropping it from the American list of terrorism sponsoring states.
It quoted one American official who asked to be anonymous that the US administration will postpone the issue of terrorism until after the next Presidential elections.
Libya, however, opened a new page in its relations with the US after its announcement to give up its program to develop weapons of mass destruction following nine months of difficult negotiations with Washington and London.
Libya had also closed the Lockerbi file and agreed to pay some USD 2.7 billion as compensations for the victims of blowing up the Pan Am plane in Lockerbie airspace in 1988, in which one Libyan agent was accused of being involved.
