Butaflika vows to complete reconciliation
Algeria, Politics, 4/20/2004
The Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika vowed to proceed forward in the national reconciliation policy, economic reforms and attempts to end the crisis in Kbyle areas. This was expressed as he was taking his constitutional oath yesterday. But he asked for a helping hand from the Algerians to continue implementing his plan.
Butaflika said, "we have to proceed into complete national reconciliation that permits us to continue fighting poverty and alienation by mobilizing all our potentials so as to eliminate the crisis." He added that reconciliation will be a completion for the national coexistence policy he had pursued during the past five years.
Butaflika indicated the intensive "presence of citizens in all elections campaigns proved that preoccupations relating to security have been converted today to have the second priority." He continued "It is evident that efforts should be made to exterminate terrorism and we will seek that in reliance to the might of our people and members of the armed forces and the security."
At the economic level, Butaflika said he will seek to improve the economic growth through continuing reforms that are capable of eliminating reliance on oil and helping in withstanding social problems including unemployment. He also said "we will continue improvements. We, in particular will modernize the public banking sector and eliminate bureaucracy which negatively affects investment and economic activity and to adapt a taxation system so as to boost investment and eliminate unlicensed economic practices."
He said " It has become a vital interest for our country to get out gradually from dependence on oil and to start preparing its economy to withstand the after- oil phase in a process in which globalization is accelerating." He extended his call to all Algerians to contribute to reaching these objectives.
Butaflika also made another call to the Berbers in Algeria in order to return back to the table of negotiations and ending the crisis of al-Kbyle area which has been continuous since three years. He said: " we will continue dialogue we have already started. There is no problem that is unsolved as far as we have the spirit of tolerance." He stressed his determination to improve the condition of the Algerian women.
