Iraq, Politics, 4/20/2004

The American occupation forces in Iraq announced that it had reached an agreement to reduce tension in al-Falujja city that states to run joint patrols including the Iraqi police in the city.

The spokesman for the occupation authority, Dan Senior, said that the agreement with the people of al-Falujja also includes pardoning persons who surrender heavy weapons and paves the way to reach hospitals and taking measures enabling burial of the killed.

Member of the Iraqi Islamic party, Hajem al-Hosni, said that the agreement becomes enforced as from yesterday and includes several positive points including a vow by the occupation forces not to attack the city in case heavy weapons are gathered in the city, noting that if a person or a group used these weapons they will be dealt with by the occupation.

He added that the agreement also stated the return back of 50 families on daily bases -- among those who had left al-Falujja because of the clashes -- for three days, on the ground that all families are permitted to return back unconditionally if cling to the cease fire continue. The agreement also states to open the way before the entry of relief items, open hospitals and permit ambulances to evacuate bodies of the killed and transfer the wounded for medical treatment, as well as trying persons who mutilated the bodies of the American contractors.

Deputy commander of the American forces in Iraq Gen. Mark Kemet said that the Marines are ready to attack and control the city in case the agreement fails.
