Moussa confirms the convening of the summit in Tunisia next month
Regional, Politics, 4/20/2004
The secretary general of the Arab league Amr Moussa said that the Arab summit will be held in Tunisia on May 22.
Moussa said in statements upon his arrival in Beirut in the course of an inter- Arab tour that the date was selected at a proposal given by the Tunisian government and no problem can obstruct that.
For his part, the spokesman for the Arab League, Husam Zaki, said that Tunisia started sending new invitations to the Arab leaders including the proposed date. However, the matter will take several days to know whether there is a consensus on the date or not.
Bahrain's foreign minister Sheikh Muhammad Bin Mubarak al-Khaleifa whose country presides over the recent Arab summit held in 2003 that the Arab foreign ministers will be meeting in Cairo on May 8 through 10 in preparations for the summit.
Tunisia had postponed the summit which was due on march 29 and 30 just 36 hours before the inaugural session because of fundamental differences in the political and economic reforms in the Arab states.
Several delegations doubted the Tunisian explanations and said that either the Tunisian President Zine al-Abidin Ben Ali wants to satisfy Washington or has unknown intention. However, the situation in Iraq and the Israeli- Palestinian will overwhelm the agenda of the summit.
